A very interesting concept. Slightly reminiscent of shareware. The uses of shareware programs were requested but not obligated to make a payment if they found the program useful. I think maybe a system could be devised where you can read the chapter on the page that could have loads of advertising. If you pay your dollar you can read the same page advertisement free. Not an original idea I know but I think it might work. Very good blog lots of points to ponder.

Your idea is fascinating – but here’s the thing …

The thing is that now, the 'secure eBook' problem has pretty much been cracked. There are a number of firms that offer it, but just one such is eBook Pro from marketingtips.com

I personally use it and it works very well. The reality is that if you can stop it being 'easily' copied then you chop off 99% of the sharing of your copyrighted material ie passing it on to friends and family etc.

The other side of the issue is more malicious - people out-and-out stealing your content and selling it themselves. That is easier to find and stop with legal actions (relative to finding thousands of passed-on copies) but still difficult.

With eBook Pro and the like, that issue is pretty much taken care of with the registration process and encryption. I have published thousands of pounds worth (double for the dollar amount) using eBook Pro and have not seen any illegitimate copies.
